|Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Who has observed fast among you today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) replied: It is I. He (the Holy Prophet again) said: Who among you followed the bier today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) replied: It is I. He (the Holy Prophet again) said: Who among you fed a poor man today? Abu Bakr (Allah he pleased with him) replied: It is I. He (again) said: Who among you visited an invalid today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) said: It is I. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Anyone in whom (these good deeds) are combined will certainly, enter paradise.|

From the webster online dictionary, Bier: a stand on which a corpse or coffin is placed; also : a coffin together with its stand
Since muslims have nothing to do with coffins, it's the first part of the definition that's applicable to us. When a muslim passes away, he is washed, shrouded and placed on a stand or stretcher like thing which is carried by four ppl on their shoulders to the burial place where the funeral prayer is performed before burial. Following such a funeral procession is highly recommended and rewardable.
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 331:
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib:
Allah's Apostle ordered us to do seven things and forbade us to do other seven. He ordered us:
to follow the funeral procession, to visit the sick, to accept invitations, to help the oppressed, to fulfill the oaths, to return the greeting and to reply to the sneezer: (saying, "May Allah be merciful on you," provided the sneezer says, "All the praises are for Allah," ) . He forbade us to use silver utensils and dishes and to wear golden rings, silk (clothes), Dibaj (pure silk cloth), Qissi and Istabraq (two kinds of silk cloths).
Carrying the deceased on the stand by ppl on their shoulders and walking to the gravesite was the way it was done in those days and in a good many places it's still done (eg. India), but in more "modern" places we have ambulances and funeral car services.
I hope I was able to clarify a little.
Allahumaj'alill hayata ziyadatan lana min kulli khayr waj'alil mauta rahatan min kulli shar. O Allah, make our lives to be an abundance of all that is good and make our death to be a freedom and rest from all that is bad. Ameen
