While it may not have been the smartest thing I've ever done... I sent the
following letter to the editors of three local newspapers. Feel free to
comment or to redistribute. Quite honestly, this started out a lot longer,
and really the very 'lite' version, as most letters to the editor must be
300 words or less.
I am an American.
I am also a Muslim.
I say this because I want to share some thoughts with you, my fellow
These acts of horror which have been committed cry out for a response; for
many of us, that initial response is understandably emotional.
In the next few weeks, it will be easy for all of us to look for a
target on which to vent our anger and frustration. It is even easier
when that target is someone who is different.
With that in mind, I wish to pose a question: Should the evidence show
that it was, in fact, individuals who happened to be Muslims who
perpetrated these acts of violence... what will we do?
There are six million Muslims in America alone. We are doctors, professors,
engineers, cab drivers, gas station owners, computer specialists, police
officers and fire fighters. We pay taxes and take our kids to ball games. We
have come from other countries, been born here, or converted. We are black,
brown, white, yellow, and red. Many of us wear funny clothes, or speak with
accents. We don't drink alcohol, or eat pork. We are, in some ways,
different from other Americans. We are also the same.
As Americans, most of us know what it is like to be stereotyped. How
many of us are of ethnic backgrounds or religious faiths which were once
oppressed or persecuted? How many of us are Irish, Italian, Asian, German,
Hispanic, Black, Latino, Indian, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, or Mormon?
So I ask again: what will we do?
Please, think before you speak, and think before you act. How we
respond to this tragedy will show the world what it really means to be an
