What happened yesterday morning on the eastern coast of the United States was a tragedy that is beyond what words can describe. Yesterday was a heinous day, a day filled with blackness, ignominy and evil. The acts that were committed against the innocent people of this country are acts that are immoral by all standards, according to all beliefs and cultures. And whoever has committed such acts of terrorism deserves to be brough to justice ... quickly.
We, the Muslims, the followers of the religion whose name itself means "peace" and "submission solely to One God" condemn the attack on the American civilians that occurred yesterday. Our heart goes out to them and we pray to Allah that He gives patience and solace to the people that are suffering because of this massive tragedy.
Although there is no hard evidence yet against any perpetrator that may be responsible for these crimes, the Media (and now the US government) has constantly been pointing in the same direction. It seems likely, now, that the US will soon declare war against Osama Bin Laden and the country that harbors him - Afghanistan.
Allah forbid that this happens, but we have to be realistic. This is the way things are moving right now.
Where do we, as American Muslims, stand in such a plight? Several things are clear. The crime commmitted yesterday is outrageously unjustified, heinous, horrific, and criminal. Among the people who were present in the World Trade Center, and other buildings that were destroyed, were Muslims! It remains unknown how many Muslims have been killed or injured because of the great mishap that occurred yeseterday. However, this does NOT justify the killing of even more innocent people in the name of Justice!
War is not the answer!
Go back a few years and try to remember the situation in Desert Storm. We had a clear enemy back then. A clear criminal. Saddam Hussein. There was a war. What was the outcome? To this day, the Iraqi people, innocent women and children, are suffering from the aftermath of the war and the sanctions that continue to be placed on the nation. Yet the criminal, Saddam Hussein, and his people live comfortably in their palaces, enjoying every day of their lives, and deliberately and constantly disobeying the demands of the world community and the United Nations to give up their weapons of mass destruction.
We must ask the question: Was justice served?
The answer: No, it wasn't!
What makes us think a war against Afghanistan will serve justice? The outcome will undoubtedly be the same. The innocent people of Afghanistan, who have already been through so much, will suffer because of the misdeeds of *some* people that *claim* to be Muslims. The bombs that will be dropped on the rebuilding nation will destroy civilians, women, children ... civilians that had no part in the destruction of the World Trade Center yesterday. Civilians that had no control over harboring Osama Bin Laden, or anyone else for that matter.
How will such a massive atrocity, that the US will inflict on the Afghani people in the name of Justice, be any different from what we ourselves faced yesterday? Is this the way that civilized people react? To fight evil with evil?
I hope the answer is a resounding "NO!"
The United States has always been a proponent of peace talks. It has pushed for peace talks virtually everywhere in the world since the past 8, 9 years. Israel, Kashmir, Bosnia, Kosova, you name it. There are other ways to subdue the enemy. Political pressure, economic pressure, the list goes on and on. And the US has the world on its side. Let's be rational. Let's not resort to the same tactics that have been used against the innocent people of America. Let's show the world that we are better and wiser.
I hope the Muslims will agree with me. And I hope that the American people will too.
May Allah help us in these trying times. And may He protect those who believe in Him.

|US rallies the west for attack on Afghanistan |
I just find the whole thing strange, Ahmed Shah Masoud may have been killed last week. This week the Taliban had a real chance for peace in the country since their enemy had been struck hard and now in the weeks to come, the Taliban may face the biggest worldwide onslaught ever.
Allah will surely protect them.
