New memorisation task
Kashif

assalaamu alaikum

After Sr. Malika's request for something else for the jannah.org people to learn, i've come up with two suggestions.

1) We have till the end of this week to memorise ayat ul-kursi & the last two ayaat of surah al-Baqara. The benefits for the one who recites these before sleep are: ayat ul-Kursi will result in Allah sending an Angel to protect you till the morning; thelast two ayat of surah al-Baqara - that they will suffice their reciter.

2) We have 10 days starting tomorrow to memorise surah al-Mulk (chapter 67). There is a GREAT reward for the one who memorises this and recites this often: protection from the punishment of the grave.

The deadline is 9.15am Wednesday morning GMT (btw. if you ever come to London, and you're feeling nerdish, go to Greenwich and you'll see a laser pointing into the sky indicating the Greenwich Time Meridian - quite amazing really).

Jazik Allah Khairen Br Kashif!

I feel like the student that got the little papers tossed at him by the class because he asked for homework.

It took me a little more than a day to memorise the first 10 ayats of Surah 18 I still repeat them to make sure I have it down pat. :) Yeah I knew I was behind the rest but I had a big project going at the time.

I feel good about these memorisations because it can only help me become a better Muslim.

Sooo... I'm in!  :)

You know there is a saying "Be careful what you ask for"!  But there is another saying "Fas Ahlul ala Dhikree inkuntum la ta' la mun" roughly speaking, ask those who know if you don't know

I just finish pouring over what I asked for.  Wow! Did you take long to think this one up Br. Kashif! ???  Do you have this in your memory bank already?  How about you  Brs. Arsalan and Arshad?

Anyway, I almost have it in InshaAllah I will be ready by the end of this week. (for number 1 that is!).

I will try very hard to have assignment 2 by Nov. 24 InshaAllah!    Wallahu A'Lam

What i'd actually prefer is for us to memorise the ayaat listed in #1.

Surah al-Mulk is 30 verses, and i think that would be ideal for memorisation over the whole of Ramadan - for example, one verse a day.

If we can agree to memorisation of ayat ul-kursee & the last two of surah al-Baqara, i have something a bit different planned for next week.

So far i'm counting as in: Malika, Haaris, Arsalan & Destined. Who else would like to join our merry band?

Count me in too (although I already know ayat-kursi) but I have taken out the print out along with the translation (it makes memorizing easy) of last two ayahs (285 and 286) and have started to memorize it. Inshallah this time I will learn it on time :)
Learning surah Mulk during ramazan is a great idea. First I thought that we have to learn the whole surah by Nov .24 and I was thinking that you people are real smart and memorize fast and was going to ask for more time myself!
FYI, I am still learning (and atleast reciting everyday) first 10 verse of surah kahf (I haven't given up Inshallah I will be able to complete in near future, Inshalalh :)  )

Assalamu alaikum,

Kashif - once again you've chosen passages that I already have memorized! :-/

But unlike last time, I'm not just going to sit here and watch you guys memorize stuff because I already have it memorized.  I'm gonna memorize Surah al-Jumu'ah and Surah al-Munaafiqun while you guys do the verses in Baqarah and Mulk insha Allah.  I've chosen these 2 surahs because the total amount comes out to be the same as the stuff you guys are doing.

If anyone else already knows the 2 ayahs in Baqarah and the entire Surah Mulk, they're welcome to join me.

For short term I memorize by trying to understand the meaning and relationship between verses. However, I usually forget within a day or two. To retain something for a long term I have to recite it everyday. Reciting in the prayers works well. But again, if I give it up for a few days I lose it again :( So it is kind of a struggle.

I'm in for the #1 (though I know most of it). We have a quran quiz also sometime in the next week or so. Check the Masjid section for details. Memorizing Surat al-Mulk in 10 days will be kinda hard. Doing it in Ramadan is a good idea. Or are we supposed to do that also?

Wasalaam.

slm,

It's best to read it from the Qur'an but I find transliterations to be helpful.

As Salaam Alaikum

For me I have to have it on a piece of paper that I can carry around with me everywhere.

I read it over and over. I try to memorize by sentence then paragraph.

Usually when I take the train to work in the morning I put it in my memory bank and by the time I get home that evening it is basically there except for a few words here and there. Then I have to recite it for a day.  it is sort of like a puzzle - you have all the pieces and you let them fall into place.

Arshad try one ayat at a time and see what happens. spend let's say twenty minutes on it and then do the next one.

I also make a little Dua in the beginning that Allah help me clear my memory for it.

I find one of the best ways to memorize is to constantly listen to the surah recited by your favourite reciter.  Just listen to it whenever you have time, in the car, or carry around a walkman with you.  Inshaa'Allah it will help.

Re: New memorisation task

assalaamu alaikum

For me the best method to memorise the Qur'an is to recite the Qur'an itself frequently. Foremost it gets you familiar with the words and the stories of the Qur'an. The more you recite the Qur'an the easier it becomes generally to memorise it (i find).

There are numerous other benefits. Since its recitation is a worship in itself, Allah rewards you for doing that good deed by allowing you to worship Him even more. Allah is great.. too great to comprehend!

And just on a parting note, the recitation of the Qur'an - or rather lack of it - is one of my biggest criticisms of practising brothers and sisters. You can ask so many of them who have been practising for years as to how much they recite a week and how much they have memorised, and they come back with pitiful answers such as "a few pages a week" or "i knowthe last 10 surahs of the Qur'an.."

The last ten surahs?! and you call yourself an activist? la hawla wa la quwwata illah billah. the very first thing that one is supposed to do when on the road to gaining firm knowledge is to strengthen the bond between himself and the Qur'an. But today, as with so many other aspects of Islam, people have turned the religion upside down.. putting lesser things higher in the scales.

Notes From Spain...Finally

Salam,
Here's some notes from the Rihla:

How to Memorize The Glorious Qur’an
- Presented by Shaykh Abdullah al-Kadi,
 (Rihla in Al-Andalus, August 2000)

1. Have Ikhlaas
   - Analyze and purify your niyyah (intention), which
should be to memorize only for Allah and not for
status or titles (eg. hafiz or qari).
   - In Surat al-Hud, Allah says that those who want
the titles of this world will be rewarded with such,
and Allah won’t diminish this reward in this world
(including non-Muslims), but that their reward in the
next will be the Fire (11:15-16).  Also in a hadith,
it is related that three people will be thrown into
the fire: one who fought and died as a martyr claiming
to do so for the sake of Allah but really only to be
called a “brave warrior”, the person who acquired
knowledge and memorized the Qur’an claiming to do so
seeking the pleasure of Allah but really only to be
called “a scholar” and “a Qari,”, and one who is
wealthy and spends his money, claiming to do so in the
cause of Allah, but really only to be called “a
generous fellow.”  (Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Chapter 43,
Number 4688 ).
   - Also, have the intention to memorize the complete
Qur’an and not just certain parts, as this will place
in your heart a greater commitment.
2. Be constant in your environment & be committed
   - Choose a specific place where you plan to sit and
memorize, thereby designating that place and a certain
time only for the memorization of the Qur’an.  For
example, between Maghrib and Isha (often know as lost
and blessed time) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Masjid
al-Taqwa.
   - No matter what, maintain going there and
memorizing at that time (except for emergencies, of
course).
3. Find good company
   - Find a friend who will help memorize with you.
Friends are enemies to each other except those who
gather for the sake of Allah.
4. Use the same Mushaf
   - Memorize from the same mushaf as this will allow
the visualization of the Qur’an itself.  One of the
best printed copies is from the King Fahd Press in
Madinatul Munawwara.
5. Test yourself
   - When you are at your greatest point of
motivation, test to see how much you can memorize in
one hour as this will indicate to you how much you can
REALLY do.
   - Make note of the number of pages and ayats as
this will help you enumerate the amount of
memorization that should be maintained and so that you
can plan your deadline.
   - Once you are under oath and moving smoothly,
Shaytan will come so you need to cut him off.
6. Listen to someone else’s recitation
   - Listen to a reciter (eg. a shaykh, a CD, etc.).
   - Several styles of recitation exist that can be
used.  Allah's Apostle, sallaLlahu alaihi wassalam,
said, "It was revealed in this way. This Qur'an has
been revealed to be recited in seven different ways,
so recite of it whichever (way) is easier for you (or
read as much of it as may be easy for you)."  (Sahih
Bukhari, Book 6, Chapter 61, Number 514).
7. Find the meaning
   - Try to understand the meaning of the tafsir of
the surahs you are memorizing.
   - This is especially useful for older people (ie.
over 20 years old) to help in memorizing.
8. Memorize in order
   - Memorize in order and don’t jump around, or else
it will be difficult to remember.
   - Start with Surah al-Baqara as this will give you
the motivation of knowing that you’ve memorized two
juz.
9. Set a deadline
   - Have a deadline for your completion of the
complete mushaf.  For example, 6 pages per week = 100
weeks = less than 2 years (if the mushaf you are using
is 600 pages).
   - Take the opening if Allah gives it to you.
10. Pray with what you’ve learned
    - Pray two rak’ats with what you memorized even if
you are holding the mushaf.
    - Typically pray your sunnah with your memorized
work.  You can do it with your fard too but without a
mushaf.  The risk however of jeopardizing your fard is
serious, and should not be done unless you feel that
you are strong enough to recite without errors.
    - If you are an imam, don’t practice with people
following you.
11. Repeat what you’ve learned
    - When you step out of your place of memorization,
constantly repeat what you’ve memorized.
12.
13.
14.
15. Repeat with your voice
    - Don’t listen to tapes and expect this will be
enough.  Recite with your own lips and voice.
16.
17. Don’t waste any time
    - Utilize the “waiting periods” between your
planned memorization days.  This includes when waiting
in lines, at doctor’s offices, walking to your
classes, etc.  Remember that we are employed by Allah,
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
18. Repeat EVERYTHING you’ve memorized
    - Repeat everything you’ve memorized everyday
until the next memorization day.  You need to repeat
all the old memorized work or else you will lose it.
    - The maximum amount to be repeated in one day is
5 juz.  Later when the amount memorized is greater,
you will need to add more days.  For example, 10 juz
will be done in two days instead of just one.
19. Go back to your friend
    - Go back to your shaykh, friend, mate, etc. to be
heard and corrected to ensure you are reciting
properly.
    - Whoever will listen to you, use them, even if
the only person who will listen to you is a kid.
20.
21. Begin to rely only on your memory
    - Try not to return to the written mushaf (as
much).
    - Remember that the Qur’an is an oral tradition
and that you may not always have the luxury of having
it in writing before you, or that you will always have
your sight to see it or hearing to listen to it.  BUT
if it is in your heart, insha’Allah, it will always be
with you.

:) Salam :)

Assalamu alaikum,

Arshad - I recite the verses in my car ALL THE TIME when I'm trying to memorize them.  You know those green mushafs that are printed in Saudi Arabia?  I usually memorize half page at a time from those, and then I repeat them while driving from campus to home, or from home to campus, or from Masjid to home or whatever.  Even while walking on campus from one class to another.

I also keep a Qur'an tape in my car stereo with the verses that I'm memorizing.  If I forget while reciting the verses, I play the tape and revise.

Once I'm fairly comfortable with the verses, I start reciting them in my prayers.

Oh yeah.  Knowing the meaning helps also.  And always memorize from the same mushaf. Don't switch between different ones.

Wassalamu alaikum.

I was disappointed in myself for not participating in the memorization of Suratul Kahf, but I'm trying to make it up with this one!

Br. Kashif, may Allah increase your reward for motivating us to do something as resourceful as this.
I know how to recite Ayatul Kursiyy and the last two ayahs of Suratul Baqarah, but not Suratul Mulk. I actually read Suratul Mulk often, and I could probably read most of it if I were prompted every now and then, but this is a good way to learn the whole thing by heart.
